Sometimes being “totally lost” doesn’t mean the world has collapsed or that life has betrayed us.
It simply means the way we used to navigate our habits, our beliefs, our thinking has broken.
Just like the man’s cane.
And in those moments, the only thing left to do is what he did:
stay still. Wait for light. Let the truth reveal itself.
Life isn’t “my life” or “your life.”
It’s just life.
Just experience happening, moment by moment.
Being lost is an experience.
Finding the next step is another.
If the cane represents thinking our constant tap-tap-tapping through life then eventually, yes, it breaks too.
And when it does, maybe the answer isn’t to panic… but to wait for the light.
For clarity.
For direct experience.
And above all don’t lose your sense of humour.
Even in darkness.
Even when everything feels broken.
As I once told my son when he left for the army reserve:
“If you lose everything else, fine. But don’t lose your sense of humour.”
